Research title: What is the difference between the conscious nature of mental imagery, perception, and other sensory states (such as dreaming and hallucinating)?
Research summary
My research focusses on the nature of mental imagery: what it is, what properties it has, and what kinds of phenomena should we call imagery. Should we, for instance, treat hallucination as a kind of imagery? How much does imagery impact upon perception, and what does this relationship mean for the way we view cognition and perception generally? My research is primarily philosophical but draws upon additional literature from psychology and cognitive neuroscience.
I have a particular focus on variations in mental imagery, such as so-called ‘extreme imagery’ conditions: aphantasia and hyperphantasia. These conditions have come to the fore in the past decade of research, partially due to their hidden prevalence in the general population. I intend to explore the relationship between these conditions and the phenomenal properties that they either lack or accentuate.
