Assessments at UofG (CoSE / MVLS)

Series Description: This course provides an introduction to the purpose, structure, and expectations of various different assessment formats. You can find useful and practical advice on a range of assessment types, including some that centre around academic writing skills (e.g. essays, lab reports, reviews) and some that focus on scientific communication skills (presentations, posters, blogs, podcasts).

Target Audience: Any student in CoSE or MVLS.

Class Title Class Description
Essays This class provides an overview of how to approach essays, including: how to break down what an essay question is asking you to do, how to build an effective essay plan, how to strengthen your arguments, how to reference appropriately, and how to approach editing.
Lab Reports  This class provides an overview of how to approach lab reports, including: structuring a report, linking theory with practice, and interpreting and presenting data.
Critical Reviews This class introduces the concept of a 'critical review', before providing guidance on how to structure a critical review, and create an informed argument within it.
Literature Reviews This class introduces the concept of a 'literature review', before providing guidance on how to structure a literature review, how you might want to mind-map ideas and choose key themes, and how to create a balanced argument.
Systemic Reviews This class introduces the concept of a 'systematic review', before providing guidance on how to approach the key stages of a systematic review. These include: formulating a research question, illustrating the search, critically appraising papers, and discussing findings.
Reflective Writing This class introduces the concept of 'reflective writing' and why reflection is important. It also then provides guidance on various approaches to reflective writing and how to structure and write a reflective essay.
Presentations This class provides an overview of how to design and deliver an effective presentation, including: what makes a good presentation; the importance of structure, content, and visuals; and dealing with questions.
Posters This class provides an overview of how to design and deliver an effective academic poster, both by covering general principles of academic posters and discussing various examples.
Blogs This class provides an introduction to blogging as a form of assessment, covering what a blog is, why blogs exist, and some general guidance on how to blog.
Podcasts This class provides an introduction to podcasting as a form of assessment, offering guidance on: defining your purpose and content, structuring podcasts, and adapting to your audience.
