School of Law

Gillian Mactaggart, Common Law LLB

I graduated from the first cohort of the Common Law (Graduate Entry) LLB program as a Canadian international student in 2020. My experience at the University of Glasgow while completing my degree was both challenging and incredibly rewarding. The coursework was rigorous, but the support from the professors and peers made it manageable and enjoyable. I found the small class sizes created an engaging learning environment and the professors were genuinely supportive and invested in our success.

The beauty of the university campus added to the experience and some of my favourite memories include studying in the law library with friends. I am forever grateful for the positive experience I had in completing my degree and the foundational skills I developed that have assisted me in my legal career.

Upon graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2020, I returned to Canada where I was required to take 7 exams (5 mandatory and 2 optional) through the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to confirm I had the knowledge and skills to become a lawyer in Canada.

After articling for eight months at a prominent plaintiff side boutique firm, I was called to the Ontario bar in 2022 and hired as an associate lawyer.

I enjoy my work as a civil litigator assisting clients to obtain compensation from insurance companies after suffering injuries in car accidents, slip/trip and falls, dog attacks, long-term disability denials and medical malpractice etc. I have represented clients both in and out of court including, administrative tribunals, Ontario Provincial Offences Court, Ontario Small Claims Court, Ontario Superior Court and Ontario Court of Appeal. It is the satisfaction of helping people and the unique challenges that each case brings that I love most about this area of law.
