margaret charrierIn September 2016 Margaret Charrier had a big birthday and very kindly arranged a charity evening, instead of a party, in Bearsden.   Her guests were very generous and the evening resulted in a donation of £1,100. Margaret is a retired teacher who worked with children with additional support needs and is very aware of the need for high quality mental health service for children, through high quality research. During the evening about 70 people enjoyed performances from musicians (including Professor Minnis who sang some cheeky blues songs) and a poet, tombola, raffle, quiz and finally a disco which got a crowd onto the dance floor. Professsor Minnis explained the reason for setting up Understanding.  Margaret involved many friends and family members to help out and had asked local businesses to contribute prizes to which they responded very generously. We are delighted that Margaret has agreed to become a trustee of Understanding Children.

Jenny Auld died on 16th February 2017, aged 95.  Jenny was a lifelong member of the Labour Party, a teacher at Duncanrig, East Kilbride and a Freeman of theEast Kilbride District.   Jenny is responsible for Professor Helen Minnis becoming a doctor having told her, at age 8, that ‘girls could be doctors too’.  Jenny was an admirer of Helen’s work and requested that instead of flowers she wanted money to be donated to mental health.  We are extremely grateful to Jenny’s family and friends for the gift of £548.39.
