Research interests

At the Glasgow ElectroChemistry On Solids (GECOS) group, our research is unified by a focus on the global energy challenge and the need for efficient, scalable and sustainable electrochemical technologies.

The first theme is advanced hydrogen technology and electrochemical fuels, where GECOS group develops solid state materials and supports the full pathway from synthesis to scaled testing in hydrogen electrolysers. The second theme is battery science, particularly fast charging sodium‑ion and potassium-ion systems. The third theme addresses the growing energy demands of modern computation. We contribute to the national NEED2D programme, which aims to develop low‑power electronic platforms based on 2D materials capable of reducing the power footprint of large‑scale computation and AI. Taken together, our work positions us among the few researchers with direct expertise in hydrogen and battery technologies, complemented by contributions to advanced electronic materials, which connects our research directly to the major energy challenges of the present.

Below is the snapshot of activities across the group that may bring us closer to practical and dependable solution to future energy storage.

Storing Excess of Renewable Energy as Valuable Chemical Feedstock

At GECOS group, we are charging ahead to store renewable energy surpluses as valuable chemical feedstock. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are great for generating green electricity, but what happens when there is too much electrictiy from wind or sunlight? Capturing these surpluses remains a major challenge. Our solution is to utilise the excess of electricity with devices  devices called electrolysers. Electrolysers can generate fuels like H2 from water or valluable chemicals (like formic acid) from water and CO2.

One exciting electrolyser application is producing hydrogen. Hydrogen is often portrayed as fuel but its real strategic value lies in its role as an irreplaceable feedstock in fertiliser production, chemical manufacturing, and emerging low‑carbon steel processes. Generating hydrogen from water requires advanced materials to ensure cost-effective production before storage and later use. Our research focuses on 2D materials to see if more efficient hydrogen generation can be achieved with them.

Together with Profs David Moran and Nikolaj Gadeegard from the School of Engineering, we have discovered of a universal process for the production of large area, multi-layer 2D metal chalcogenide films and their implementation in water electrolysis. We exploited the 2D feature of MoTe2 and deployed MoTe2 films directly in electrolysers.

Advancing Energy Storage beyond Li-ion Batteries

Traditional lithium-ion batteries depend on scarce and expensive elements. Our research investigates 2D transition metal chalcogenides, which can deliver performance comparable to lithium-ion systems while relying on more abundant and lower cost resources such as sodium or potassium. By enhancing the stability and efficiency of Na-ion and K-ion batteries, the aim is to develop energy storage technologies that operate for longer periods, exhibit improved safety, and can be produced at reduced cost.

Our team has shown that two-dimensional CrSe2 cathodes can achieve full capacity in K-ion batteries. This behaviour is unusual because potassium ions are significantly larger than lithium ions, and such full utilisation of the cathode is rarely observed. With support from computational studies, we have explained this improvement by linking it to the electronic structure of the CrSe2 host. Current work focuses on determining how this material can provide high performance characteristics, for example improved rate capability or suitability for fast charging.

Enabling Net Zero and the AI Revolution with Ultra-Low Energy 2D Materials and Devices (NEED2D) 

The UKRI-funded NEED2D Programme Grant is a five-year initiative led by Prof. Sir Colin Humphreys. Its focus is the development of 2D materials for applications in energy-efficient electronics and quantum technologies. Within NEED2D, we lead the synthesis of 2D thin film materials using Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). We also apply pulsed electrodeposition to pre-pattern metallic components. This enables controlled growth of both simple and compositionally complex 2D chalcogenides in a uniform and reproducible manner. The programme aims to create wafer-scale 2D semiconductors that will be distributed across the NEED2D network and integrated into Dirac-source transistors, ferroelectric field-effect transistors, and neuromorphic devices. We also lead the functionalisation of 2D materials through covalent surface modification, which opens new opportunities to engineer band alignment, interface dipoles, and chemical stability.

We are also excited to participate on the SNAP project, which will bring the United Kingdom’s first LEAP‑6000XR Atom Probe Tomography (APT) system to the University of Glasgow. This state-of-the-art instrument will allow us to identify individual atoms and map their positions with sub-nanometre precision. For 2D materials, this level of insight is transformative. It reveals how dopants are incorporated, how interfaces evolve, and how nanoscale variations influence device behaviour. Such atomic-level understanding will accelerate the design of more reliable, high‑performance materials and will strengthen the United Kingdom’s position at the forefront of 2D materials research.
