Network Programme

W2 Overview

Strategic Fibre

The Strategic Fibre rollout is driven by the network design and as such the Capita Network Team will work with the University to define the fibre connectivity requirements between Buildings and Equipment Nodes within the buildings. This will inform the review, survey, and production of any relevant documentation to allow Strategic Fibre to be deployed.

It is currently assumed that this information will be supplied in batches / zones to allow designs to be produced as early as possible and allow for a pipeline of delivery to be implemented from Quarter 1 2025.

Software Defined - Access

Software-Defined Access (SDA) is an innovative networking architecture developed by Cisco that transforms traditional network infrastructure by using software-defined networking (SDN) principles to simplify and automate network management.

It is a way to manage computer networks using smart software that automatically sets up, controls, and secures network connections, making it easier and faster to connect devices and keep them running smoothly. It's like having a super-intelligent network manager that can quickly configure network settings, protect against security threats, and adapt to changes, without someone having to manually set up each device and connection.

In Phase 4, we implemented a small foundational SD-A pilot across a small number of selected sites. In the early stages of Phase 5, we will review the success and learnings of this pilot to help define and agree the scope and approach we will seek to deliver SD-A during the remainder of Phase 5.
