The Living Laboratory

The Health Innovation Hub (HiH) has been awarded in the Innovation category at the British Council for Offices (BCO) Scottish Awards, recognising excellence in office design, fit-out, operation and sustainability.

The achievement reflects the Health Innovation Hub's role as a purpose-built environment designed to support collaboration, flexibility and growth within the life sciences sector.

Judges praised the building as “an inspiring convergence of science, enterprise, and community,” highlighting its success in bringing together researchers, healthcare professionals and innovative companies within a collaborative ecosystem. In addition, they emphasised the tailored support for start-ups transitioning from academic settings, as well as the strength of the facility's integrated design and investment in flexible, collaborative space.

Developed in partnership with Kadans Science Partner, the 87,000 sq ft facility has transformed a former brownfield site within the Glasgow Riverside Innovation District into a leading destination for research, innovation and collaboration.

Designed with flexibility at its core, HiH provides fully serviced laboratories, shared equipment rooms and adaptable office space, supporting organisations from university spinouts to established international businesses. The building also features a community café, collaboration spaces, and facilities shaped through engagement with local residents, reinforcing the University's and Kadans’ commitment to developing innovation infrastructure with communities, not just for them.

Achieving BREEAM Excellent certification, the Health Innovation Hub sets a new benchmark for sustainable, future-proof life sciences development in Scotland. By combining specialist infrastructure, clinical proximity and a pan-European innovation network from Kadans, the facility is positioned to accelerate breakthrough science, attract inward investment and deliver lasting benefits for patients, communities and the economy.

The Health Innovation Hub will now go forward to represent Scotland at the BCO National Awards in October.
